The Shiv Sena core committee led by Uddhav Thackeray has decided to back NDA Candidate Droupadi Murmu in the coming presidential election, the party’s leader Sanjay Raut said on Monday but insisting that this doesn’t mean they support the BJP.
The announcement comes the same day that a group of Shiv Sena MPs who attended an event called by Uddhav Thackeray at his home at Mumbai “requested” the MP to back NDA presidential candidate Droupadi Murmu as President and open the way to possibly a deal with the BJP and the separatist Eknath Shinde group, news reports claimed.
A total of 16 MPs stated that the party should give its full support to President-elect candidate of the NDA, Droupadi Murmu.
“Shiv Sena has made a decision to vote for Murmu for the presidency, but this doesn’t mean that we support BJP,” Sanjay Raut declared on Tuesday.
The presidential elections are scheduled to take place on July 18 and the whip is not in place for president’s election and MPs can vote according to their preferences. Sena Member Gajanan Kirtikar, who is the party’s spokesperson for media, said that 16 members of the party were in agreement that Sena should Murmu because she is the “woman from the tribe”.
“She was an NDA candidate, but Droupadi Murmu is part of the tribes and is an Indian woman. We must give her our full support. This was the request of the MPs (of NDA). Uddhav said that he’ll announce his decision in a week or two days,” Kirtikar said.
Sixteen of the 18 Lok Sabha MPs of the Sena physically attended the crucial gathering on presidential elections and they all voted in support of Murmu, Kiritkar said. “Out of the 18 MPs present only two were presenttwo of them namely Bhavana Gawali as well as Shrikant Shinde. All other MPs belonging to the party attended the gathering,” he added.
